When all of your retired friends are downsizing, it’s common to feel pressured to do the same - even if you love your current home. I just had some friends ask me about moving to a smaller home. Here's what I told them to consider:
- Is your house really too big for you? Their home was actually modest in size.
- Can you do the required maintenance? If you can’t or don’t want to, can you pay someone to do it? The monthly fees for planned communities are often more than you'll pay.
- How often would you see friends and family if you moved? My friends decided they loved their community too much to move. If one of them needs assisted living in the future, they’ll pursue in-home options.
Everyone has different needs as they age, so why blindly follow the crowd? I suggest visiting some friends who have downsized to see what they like and dislike about their new place. Then decide for yourself. Good luck!
